RPG Review: Knave 2nd Edition
As a longtime D&D player who’s just getting into OSR games, I was looking for an RPG system that mixes the charm of classic adventures with some modern gameplay improvements. Knave 2e does this perfectly and has quickly become my go-to for fantasy RPG sessions.
Knave 2e builds on its predecessor’s simple mechanics and adds modular subsystems for different in-game events. This 80-page hardcover is beautifully illustrated by Peter Mullen, and every page is filled with innovative game design that makes running and playing sessions a breeze.
One of the best things about Knave 2e is its robust toolkit for Game Masters. With over 75 d100 tables, you can quickly create dungeons, NPCs, cities, and even entire factions. This makes it super easy to build dynamic worlds on the fly, sparking creativity and streamlining prep time.
Knave’s mechanics are simple and efficient. The basic d20 system is easy to learn, so new players can start adventuring quickly. Character creation is straightforward, with ability scores quickly determined, as well as a few backgrounds to flesh the character out and provide equipment. Despite its simplicity, the system works well with decades of D&D modules and adventures.
I love the slot-based inventory system in Knave. It’s a smart way to manage gear and resources, adding a strategic element to what you choose to carry. Your character can carry 10 items, plus your Constitution modifier. Easy. Taking damage can cause wounds that occupy item slots, making you decide what to drop. This adds urgency to every adventure, as you steadily deplete your resources.
Knave 2e’s classless character system is refreshing. Players can mix and match for unique and versatile characters. Whether your character is casting spells, wielding weapons, or calling down divine miracles, their effectiveness depends on their choices and how they manage their inventory. This flexibility encourages creativity and personalized playstyles.
The magic systems are impressive, with a spell system offering 100 level-less spells for creative effects. For those who love unpredictable magic, the spell generator adds fun chaos. The relationship-driven divine magic system introduces interesting dynamics, as characters bargain with patrons for blessings, adding interaction and consequence to divine magic.
Knave excels in providing engaging activities both in and out of combat. The monster-hunting alchemy system lets characters hunt magical creatures and turn their abilities into potions and spell components, adding a rewarding layer of exploration and resource management. Downtime activities like carousing, gambling, recruiting hirelings, and building bases offer players a chance to develop their characters and the world between adventures. The tactical warfare system is another highlight, resolving mass battles quickly and efficiently, keeping the focus on fun and storytelling.
I can confidently say that Knave 2e has won me over. Its mix of old-school sensibilities with modern mechanics is spot on. The flexibility, ease of use, and sheer fun make it an essential addition to any RPG collection. I’m excited to dive into more adventures with Knave and see where this fantastic system takes us next. If you’re looking for a versatile, engaging, and beautifully crafted game, Knave 2e should be at the top of your list. Happy adventuring!
