One More Multiverse Shutting Down
One More Multiverse, the Virtual Tabletop service, is shutting down. After only a few years, and only a couple of RPGs featured on the site, it feels a little inevitable. While it was really cool and unique in that it allowed GMs to create a VTT that felt more like a video game, it was also super complex and would take a long, long time to set anything up if you weren’t using the preloaded games like Yazeba’s Bed and Breakfast, a game I’m REALLY excited to see the physical release of.
OMM had previously raised 17.5 million dollars, which seems like a lot, according to this Reddit post, just to use the realtime firebase as a service would cost $5 a person. And this platform was free, with the ability to, say, spend $30 on Blades in the Dark. So if you played at a table of 5 players and a game master, after one month, the service would be losing money. Factor in the hosting costs and everything, and that money seemed to dry up pretty quick.
In addition, building environments was a lot more complicated than it is in other VTTs. It just wasn’t super easy to even set up a game to play.
It feels like OMM probably didn’t have a shot, which is unfortunate. I was looking forward to seeing what other people were gonna make.
