Product Review: Loke Battle Mats Add-On Scenery Dungeon Decals
The Add-On Scenery Packs from Loke Battle Mats are a huge addition to the Books of Battle Mats, which I’ve reviewed a few times before.
The decal sets are static cling sets that allow you to firmly attach and easily remove tons of different terrain and magical elements, while keeping out of the way of your miniatures and tokens.
Each of the sets I’ve received, I’ve placed inside of the Books of Battle Mats for storage on the blank pages. I can flip the books open, easily find what I’m looking for, peel it off, and go.
The Magic effects cover a huge array of magical effects, including fireballs, wall of fire, burning hands… and other non-burny stuff. There are magical steeds, areas of darkness, walls of thorns, prismatic sprays… These are SUPER useful, even if you’re not using the Loke Battle Mats, to give you the ability to quickly lay down magical effects to see what’s been affected. The artwork is all gorgeous, very evocative, and I recommend this set for everyone playing any fantasy game.
The Town Trimmings are a MUST have to add to the Town and Tavern books. There’s a huge variety of objects here, including carts, tables, chairs, walls, and even rooftops to cover up the interiors of your maps.
The Town and Tavern books are VERY sparse on anything other than floors and walls, and for good reason, so that you can add any terrain that you see fit, without needing to worry about telling the players, “oh, ignore that forge there, that’s not actually there.
With this set, as I said, you can add rooftops to the maps to hide what’s inside. As you can see here, all of these buildings have the static clings added on the top, except for the one building, which I’ve added a table of goods to. Now, as the players go around this narrow street looking to purchase goods, I can remove the roofs to reveal what’s inside. It’s simple and effective, and also very, very cool.
The Siege set has a bunch of great elements as well, with towers and walls, battering rams, dead bodies, wooden spikes and catapults. There are a bunch of good campsite elements too, which makes it useful for wilderness adventures as well.
The siege elements are going to be hugely useful to me in games going forward, so expect to see them pop up with some regularity.
I DEFINITELY recommend these even if you don’t go picking up the Loke Battle Mats (which you really should). I’ve got a ton of 4e era maps I’ve laminated, so all of these elements will be able to stick there as well.
Right now, we’re only a few hours away from the end of their Wilderness Books of Battle Mats, so you should definitely head over there and join up with that if you like everything you see here. There are new decal sets as part of that Kickstarter.
You can pick up the Add-On Scenery Packs to add to your books of Dungeon Mats at the Loke Battle Mats online store.
