Product Review: “Town & Taverns Books of Battle Mats” and “Little Book of Battle Mats: Towns & Taverns Edition”
Loke Battle Mats has done it again! Their new Town & Taverns Books of Battle Mats provide a whole host of new locations that are quick and easy to get to the table and begin playing with. I’ve previously reviewed the Dungeon Books of Battle Mats, but let’s quickly talk again about what the “Books of Battle Mats” line contains.
It comes with two 12″x12″ spiral-bound books. The books are able to open up flat on the table, and by matching page numbers between the two books, you can create large 24″x24″ battle maps. If you switch up the pages and hunt for interesting combinations, you can mix any pages together. By folding the books up to only show a single page, you can also make smaller maps, or place it next to the other book open to two pages to make different shapes.
It’s a really great concept, bolstered by the dry and wet erase laminated surface, so you can add anything to the scene. My next review will be talking about the static clings you can place on them to create even more detailed maps.
The maps are even better quality than the dungeon, with really nice textures and patterns. I love the variety there is, and I love that you can combine them with the other books, or even extra copies of the same book set.
By placing all four books from my collection together, I was able to create an interesting mixture of locations, from sewers to keeps with vast libraries. The possibilities are endless, especially if you get another set, or back the Kickstarter for their Wilderness set, ending in only a few days.
I’ll likely be picking up a second set of the Towns and Taverns books in order to create larger and more varied maps on the fly.
Secondly, I also wanted to talk about their Little Book of Battle Mats: Towns & Taverns Edition. This small 6″x6″ book is also spiral-bound, and contains maps for small encounters. The players are traveling down the road and encounter an old hag? You can flip the book open to the road map. Need a battle on a small bridge? You can easily grab this off the shelf and use that page.
There are small dungeon sections, narrow streets, a boat, and a lot more. Its small size makes it perfect to throw into your bag on your way to a game session as a just-in-case. I’ll include more pictures at the end of the post.
You can pick up the Towns & Taverns Books of Battle Mats and the Little Book of Battle Mats: Towns & Taverns Edition at the Loke Battle Mats store, or by asking your FLGS. Be sure to back their Kickstarter now to get in on the Wilderness set.
Next up, we’ll be looking at the great Static Clings you can use to enhance the maps further.
