RPG Product Review: Immersive Battle Maps, Vol 1
Immersive Battle Maps is a collection of 32 maps of a wide variety of locations, from cities to battlefields to the depths of hell itself.
The locations include a castle wall, stormwracked docks, a weapons forge, various taverns and barracks, rooftops, an arena, a ship at sea, caverns, a graveyard, and a lot more.
Each battle map has a faint grid on it to more easily utilize the combat rules while not interfering with and distracting from the beautiful art on the map.
Each map has fantastic details, instantly giving you ideas on how to utilize map elements into a battle. Lava, molten metal, sewer water, ice floes, shifting sand, all can make a battlefield more dynamic.
What I love about these maps is that with the wide variety, and with how easy they are to set up and play with, if an unexpected situation arises, you can pop open the book and you’ll instantly have an evocative scene. Did your players announce they’re going down into the sewers? Are they heading to a tavern to rough up some bandits? You can instantly set the scene and prepare for a fight. I’m running the Tyranny of Dragons in the future, and there are at least 3 maps here useful for the first session alone.
Not only are there greatly detailed maps, there are also blank maps as well, covering an open ocean, grasslands, and cobblestones. With 3D terrain such as trees and buildings, you can add a whole layer of depth to the boards as well.
The unpainted WizKids terrain works great for a lot of the pieces as well such as the campsites and tables.
The book generally lays flat, though if you’re at one far end of the book or the other, you’ll want to put a spare RPG book underneath to make sure it lays perfectly flat. All the maps are dry-erase so you can add your own details, and are 22″x17″. The book is very large, so it doesn’t fit conveniently on your standard RPG shelf either, but you wouldn’t have such large, beautiful landscapes of they were any smaller.
Overall, this is a really fantastic product, perfect for tons of situations in your own games. I highly recommend it.
