Prepping for a Hundred Years War Mega-Campaign
As we eagerly await the Joan of Arc miniatures game release in December, my brother and I have begun prepping for what should be the largest wargame undertaking we’ve ever attempted.
Many of the heroes in the game are from other periods of the Hundred Years War (which was actually 116 years long, with gaps of peace in between the fighting), rather than the period Joan appeared in. So, we’ve decided we’re going to play through the entirety of the Hundred Years War.
After a bit of hunting, I found the Hundred Years War chit wargame, which covers the entirety of the war, with lots of different factors that help simulate the war. I’ve ordered it, and will be looking over the rules, but the plan is, any time there would be a military conflict, we’ll play a game of Joan of Arc to simulate the battles.
This is going to require a lot of work, because I also want to make sure to be accurate to the battlefields of each region, as well as to the sieges which will need to take place to take cities. Luckily, there are siege rules for Joan of Arc, so I’ll be able to use those. I want the layout of the sieges to match each city, so I’m researching each city in France to determine how to best represent each.
We’ll also keep track of the advancement of technology, so no Arquebuses at the beginning of the campaign, though they’ll make an appearance later.
Also, I’m planning on using my Pirates of the Spanish Main ships for any sea-based battles, despite them being the wrong era.
As we move along, I’ll keep you updated, but I’d like to create some comprehensive rules for everyone to read and enjoy. I imagine this will be a multi-year campaign, but it should be a lot of fun.
