My Dive Into Star Wars Legion

I’m sad! I’m on the opposite side of the world from my beautiful Star Wars Legion models.

I swore I wasn’t going to get into this. I was going to focus on Necromunda and Age of Sigmar, but then I saw the minis, and I knew it…

So here we are. I’m fully in. Luckily, a gift certificate to one store and some store credit at another shop in town, and I ended up spending a total of about 40 bucks on about 250 bucks in miniatures.

So far, I’ve picked up two Legion core boxes, an extra AT-RT, an extra Speeder Bike Squad, and an Airspeeder. Of those, I’ve painted up one core box of Imperials and one of the squads of Stormtroopers from the other core box.

You can see above my core box of legion painted up, but here’s some closer detail:

DaXNVvjWsAQUDQmMy Darth Vader, despite seeing a lot of comments online saying, “I could never paint mine that well,” is shockingly simple. He’s painted solid black, then brushed ever so lightly with grey in a few highlighted places. I did the silver on his chest piece, his gorget, his lightsaber and his faceplate. I painted the buttons on his chest. Very simple, 10 minutes of work. Then I did the Object Source Lighting. The first time I’ve attempted it. I took some bright red, made it really dry on the brush, then just lightly brushed over the places that would receive light from the saber. Then I did it again, just over the top of that, and in fewer spots. Then a final one on just the very edges of things, to really make those places pop. Then I was done! You can do the same, very easily.

Dah6stJW4AEBWvdMy stormtroopers are very simple too. These guys on the right are shadow squad, where I sculpted some cloaks onto them. You can ignore that for this tutorial. Spray the minis entirely white. Paint black on the guns, the hands, the elbows, the eyes and brow, the little center mouth piece, and the butt. Then black in the whole thing, making sure it doesn’t pool on the most raised parts of the mini. Done. That’s really all there is to it. Besides the primer, I only use one paint and one wash. Also, the pauldrons on each squad leader, and the colored stripe indicating what squad each member belongs to, but that’s barely worth mentioning.

DZJMdoeVQAE75MtI’m looking forward to getting my rebels painted up too. I’ve been cutting bits off of random WotC prepainted SW minis to make a very diverse group of rebels. My favorite so far is my Trandoshan AT-RT driver. I’ll share pics once they’re done too.

I’m also planning out a couple of distinct boards, such as a Felucian Clone-Wars-Era battleground, with remnants of the Clone Wars scattered around, overgrown with the plantlife of 20 years.

Once I get some battles under my belt when I get back, I’ll be sharing some battle reports as well, so look forward to that.
