Number of Views :1111

Over on Character Generation, Liz talks about what five games influenced her. I’d like to talk about the five games that influenced me.

1. Star Wars D6. Like Liz, this was my first RPG. It introduced me to a world where anything was possible. I had a blast with it, even if I only played it (back then) about 10 times. It inspired me to make my own terrible RPGs with my brother as we sought to discover more about what this whole roleplaying thing was. I’ve recently rediscovered this game, and it still holds up as a fantastic ruleset for simulating the Star Wars universe. Perfect.

2. Star Wars D20. This was the first game I ran. This system is one of the best systems I know, but only on a personal level, because I know that I could run this game into eternity without ever looking at a book. I know it that well. It also taught me how to run things completely on the fly, and knowledge of this system allows me to run any other d20 system (including 4e) on the fly. I’m still playing online with my players from 11 years ago, in a modified version of this system, with the same characters, and hope to continue on until the end of time.

3. Savage Worlds. This game blew me away when I first played it with its simplicity, but also its familiarity. This game is my preferred universal system, even over d20. It really allows you to play anything you could imagine playing. If you want a game where your characters are mundane, and also sort of badass, this is where you’ll want to look. It’s Necessary Evil campaign is pretty incredible. Up until Marvel Heroic came out, it was my go-to when someone would want to play Superheroes. Speaking of…

4. Marvel Heroic Roleplaying. I know I shout its praises, but it’s for good reason. The Marvel Heroic RPG is one of the best things I’ve seen in a long while. It allows for some really dynamic and interesting games, with a wide variety of roleplaying opportunities. The “rules-lite” approach is very indie in flavor. This isn’t Champions, Mutants and Masterminds of Necessary Evil. This is a game that replicates the action that takes place in a comic book, without any further need for rules bloat.

5. Burning Wheel. This game is my unicorn. I’ve never, ever run a game of it, but I love it completely. I’ve tried, I’ve tried so hard to run it, but without much interest from anyone. The ability to scale-up or scale-down the rules for your group, the simplicity of the dice rolls, and the lifepaths. Oh, the lifepaths… I love them so much. If every game in the world had lifepaths like this game, I’d be so very happy.

What are your Five Games? Tell me here, or on your own blog, but make sure to link back here and to Liz’s post over at Character Generation, so that we can come visit and see what your five are.

Beck before the internet was big, it was tricky to find RPG materials. This would have been around 1999, and I scoured the internet for whatever material I could find for my Star Wars group. One particular adventure I stumbled across in my scourings was The Abandoned Asteroid.

I ran it, I loved it. Nice, simple, and very claustrophobic.

Years, and years and years later, I got a message from one of my players from back in the day. We’re still playing online now, but she was interested in running a game for her nephews and nieces. She told me she discovered an adventure online that took place on an abandoned asteroid.

Having completely forgot about playing in it all those years ago, she really enjoyed it, and I offered her some advice on some tweaks to make.

I’m thinking I’ll run it as one of my one-shots. Check out the link above. I think you’ll enjoy it.

Good question.

My hobby is collecting projects. I’ll often begin working on something, then leave it to the side when I become bored, only to come back to it again months later. This is what’s been going on with Veil of Secrecy (formerly known as Pointman, Hacker & Thief). I was expecting to have it out by the end of last year, but it now looks to be done by the end of this year.

So, here’s what I’m working on.

Websites

Dice Monkey: Still going strong here. I post up whenever I think of things to write about. It used to be every day (sometimes twice a day), but lately, it’s dwindled to every other day or so.

Dungeons and Dragons and Dads: I write for this one on occasion, and I’ve got some ideas for articles. It’s just a matter of getting it done.

The Time That is Given Us: This is my site for my writing. Here’s where I collect what I’ve written in one place. There’s no set schedule, so as I write a piece of fiction, it’ll go up there.

Podcasts

RPG Circus: I’m still on the show, as I’m available. The last few episodes, I haven’t been able to make, but I hope to get back to it.

Dice Monkey Radio: Formerly called the Dice Monkey Dicecast, this is a new podcast I’ve started. One episode is up, another one is in editing. It’ll only be going up about once a month, so I have plenty of time for editing. It only requires getting one other person on, and who that is is different every month, so I can just fit it into my schedule. Not too time consuming. It’s put out by the Tome Show, so I just pass it along to Jeff when I’m done.

Gaming

The Godfell Stone: I’m currently running a 4e campaign, which you’ve seen here on the site. It’s going well, though we haven’t gotten together in the last few weeks.

Star Wars: Shattered Alliance: This is a game of Star Wars I’m running on RPOL.net. It’s with the group of friends I’ve been playing with since 2000 or so. After we wrapped up the story that started 11 years ago, we started a new one. I keep forgetting to get on there and post, but I really need to.

Star Wars d6: I’m running this occasionally for a group of guys, including Gary Sarli and Enrique Bertran. We play on Maptools, and will be getting together soon again (I hope).

Fiasco

With Great Power…: This was sitting on my computer for about two months. One day, my brother and I hopped online and began writing up different notes for this Fiasco Playset. Then… it sat there. I finally knocked the layout out in about a half an afternoon, as I already had the template from when I did Toil & Trouble. It’s been moderately successful. While I’ve seen some play session reports from Toil & Trouble, nothing from With Great Power… so far. Hopefully I’ll get some feedback soon.

Where No Man Has Gone Before: This is my next playset. It’ll be dealing with Star Trek-ian themes. Hope to mock a few tropes here and there. Also, I’m considering a Mission mechanic to add to the game. I look forward to working on it.

A Scarred Face in Miami: I’m going to be working on this one with Enrique. He’s been kicking around the idea of a 70′s-80′s Miami playset for a while now, and wants to write it. I think I’m being used for my graphic art skills, though…

Other Projects

Veil of Secrecy: It’s off at the editor’s! I finally got it done; an espionage RPG. My first full RPG. I plan on making a PoD version of it once it’s out, too. Stuart Robertson of Robertson Games is working on the cover, and it’ll be laid out by Michael Wolf of Stargazer’s World. It’ll be released through Stargazer Games as a free PDF. I really look forward to seeing a finished copy!

The Powergrid System: I’ve got an idea rattling around for a superhero RPG. I’d love to write it down, but I’ve been chatting with Scott of The Angry DM about the mechanics. Not much more to say on that at the moment.

Innstrad 4e Supplement: I’m taking the material WotC has been putting out on their site about the new Magic: The Gathering set, and assembling it into PDF, adding in 4e rules such as monsters, knowledge rolls, and such. I’ve gotten the first chapter done. You can see what I’ve got here.

Imperial Guard Army: I’ve got a Warhammer 40,000 army that really, really needs to get assembled, painted, and onto the battlefield. Not sure when I’ll be done, but it’s a pretty large army still on its sprue.

-

And that’s about it. So I keep myself busy by gathering projects and sitting on them for a while. Keep an eye open as some of these projects get completed!

Number of Views :4688

Here’s another set of Star Wars templates.

I’ve gotten a system for them now, in that I can usually knock one out in about a half hour. The changing art for different genders is nice and quick, so when I have two genders, it takes about 45 minutes.

I’m continuing to work my way through. I’ve realized that the Force-using classes take a little more work, as they need room for their Force powers, as evidenced in the Alien Student of the Force.

I had a comment yesterday from Wayne, who wondered my reason for including so few skills.

It was a design decision I made, for a few reasons. One, it saves space to not have all those blank spaces. Two, similar to how many D&Ders are switching over to the Essentials, I wanted to keep the core concepts of each of the Templates as core. In other words, your character can improve as much as he wants, just within those skills. Want to have other skills? Play another template. There are plenty of them to choose from. It makes the Templates similar in concept to the Classes of other RPGs.

You can, of course, always right new skills on the back of the sheet.

In any case, here are some more sheets!

Number of Views :3410

The Liturgy of Nerath posts I was going to work on are going to have to wait for a few days, as I’ve got something to show you.

Last Saturday, I tried to get a group onto Google+ Hangouts to play the Star Wars d6 Roleplaying Game. This was the first RPG I ever played, and I was looking forward to getting some friends together, including Gary Sarli, who used to work for WotC on their Star Wars line.

The game, however, fell through. Gary was the only guy who was going to be able to attend, so I decided to reschedule. I don’t have a new date, but I’m looking at the calendar to set it up.

In the meantime…

I was looking over the templates in the back of the book. For those who don’t know, Star Wars had the option for full character creation, but had a great system for playing almost out the gate: Templates. You would take a template, which was basically a half-completed character sheet, and fill in some last details, such as your skills. If I’m remembering correctly, you have 7 points to spend on your skills. Each Template featured the skills you could choose from.

While this seems like it limits creativity, in reality, it allows for some great diversity. Two Smugglers or Bounty Hunters will never be alike.

The templates are simple-looking enough, but I wanted to make them look really good for anyone playing in my upcoming game. I really like the D&D Encounters character sheets in their compactness, so I decided to mimic those. What began as a simple project has now ballooned into something huge.

I took the Encounters sheet, put it into Photoshop, then covered the sheet so I couldn’t see it anymore. I would occasionally make it visible again so that I could use it for reference. I went on to the Star Wars Artists Guild and grabbed art (you can see the name of the artists at the bottom of the sheet) but by no means is the art authorized.

I started with the Bounty Hunter, then decided to make my own, creating the Clone Trooper in case anyone wanted to run a game in the Clone Wars. Initially I was only going to do the ones in the Star Wars 2nd Edition rulebook, but there are some great ones in the 2nd Edition (Revised and Expanded) rulebook, so I’ll be utilizing them as well (as evidenced by the Young Senatorial below). Also, when I have art for both genders, I’ll include versions for men and women. In the case I can only find art for one gender, we’ll stay with that.

The sheets can be printed off either full-page, or half-page, whichever you prefer.

Please let me know what you think, or if there’s anything to be added. I’m still early in the project, so changing stuff is much easier now than 2o sheets from now.

The next Template on my docket is the Quixotic Jedi.

From their site:

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce that it has entered a comprehensive licensing partnership with Lucasfilm Ltd. for the worldwide rights to publish card, roleplaying, and miniatures games set in the popular Star Wars™ universe!

”Being able to publish gaming products in the Star Wars universe is quite simply a hobby-game company’s dream come true,” said Christian T Petersen, CEO of Fantasy Flight Games. “I’m confident that both Star Wars fans as well as FFG’s regular customers will be blown away by the game experiences we have planned for this legendary IP.”

“As a leader in hobby gaming, we’re excited to be partnering with Fantasy Flight Games,” said Howard Roffman, President of Lucas Licensing. “Fun and adventure are hallmarks of the Star Wars saga, and FFG perfectly captures this in their games.”

This is fantastic news for any Star Wars fan. Fantasy Flight is known for their very high quality products, using IPs such as Warhammer Fantasy, Warhammer 40,000, Lord of the Rings, Battlestar Galactica and more. What are their first two releases? A minis game and a card game.

The minis game:

X-Wing is a tactical ship-to-ship combat game in which players take control of powerful Rebel X-wings and nimble Imperial TIE fighters, facing them against each other in fast-paced space combat. Featuring stunningly detailed and painted miniatures, X-Wing recreates exciting Star Wars space combat throughout its several included scenarios. Select your crew, plan your maneuvers, and complete your mission!

The X-Wing starter set includes everything you need to begin your battles, such as scenarios, cards, and fully assembled and painted ships. What’s more, X-Wing’s quick-to-learn ruleset establishes the foundation for a system that can be expanded with your favorite ships and characters from the Star Wars universe.

And the card game:

Daring Rebel spies have uncovered a weak point in the Galactic Empire’s defenses. Tensions run high as the Rebels assemble a strike team with one chance to set back the Empire’s quest for total galactic domination, but with zero margin for error! Coordinating hit-and-run attacks to distract the Imperials, the Rebel Alliance relies upon a handful of heroes to undertake a vital mission…

Star Wars: The Card Game is a cooperative LCG that puts 1-4 players in command of the Rebel strike force and mission team. Players will launch fleets of starships and direct some of the most famous heroes in the Star Wars galaxy as they confront the might of the Empire. By working together, players can fend off Imperial assaults and complete their mission, winning the game! In Star Wars: The Card Game, players take the roles of such notable heroes as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia as an Imperial deck opposes their mission attempts with a devious artificial intelligence. With a wealth of characters, starships, missions, and enemies, Star Wars: The Card Game immerses players in galactic conflict.

You’ll note that in the first paragraph of their announcement, they speak of RPGs as well. I am so very excited. FFG has some really high-quality stuff.

Unfortunately, though I’m only a few hours away, I won’t be in attendance this year. Next year, Bridget and I plan on attending, however.

There’s a lot of thoughts I’ve got on GenCon, primarily what two companies are going to be announcing.

Thought the First

Let me start by saying that I have no foreknowledge of this. My brother used to work at Fantasy Flight, but is mum about whether my theory is correct.

That being said, I think that at GenCon, Fantasy Flight will be announcing that they have the Star Wars RPG license. There’s been a lot of talk since Mongoose announced that they didn’t get the license. To quote a portion of their blog post: “The interesting thing is why our negotiations ended – another company beat us to it. We are not going to reveal who this is (you have heard of them), as that is their fanfare to blow. However, I am sure many will find it intriguing that the licence covers card games, RPGs, and… miniatures. Now, the company concerned is not known for its miniatures lines, which will probably put paid to my dream of 28mm multipart/multipose Stormtroopers.”

In my opinion, the only possible company for this would be FFG. They also have a lot of IPs under their belts, and I could definitely see them doing some amazing stuff with the game. At this point it has been more than a year since Wizards lost the IP, and I can imagine FFG keeping it hush-hush until they have fully playtested the system they’ll be using and are ready to release. So keep an eye out for that.

Thought the Second

I have a feeling there’s going to be huge news coming out from Wizards of the Coast. In the last year they’ve cut down their production, and recently, they’ve been talking a lot about old editions. Additionally, they have made the Game Table they have work for any edition of D&D (presumably). I think there’s going to be two big announcements. One, they’re going to release a D&D 4e Basic. I think it will be an even more simplified version of 4e than the builds for Essentials, and will be much more like 1e than even 3e.

Secondly, I predict that they will be starting up releasing PDFs, not just of 4e, but of all the editions. Right now, they’re making no money on the previous editions, so it only makes sense that they would do so. Perhaps even at RPGNow, where you could order print copies of the old books. That would be phenomenal.

Anyway, those are my two predictions. We’ll see if it pans out.

The first RPG I ever played was Star Wars 2nd (Revised and Expanded), so it was like seeing an old friend after many, many long years.

The pure simplicity of the ruleset is amazing to read, and seeing how simple the Star Wars universe was back then is so refreshing. No Clone Wars, no Naboo. No armies of Jedi. The 2nd Edition came out around the same time the various Expanded Universe titles were kicking off, but before the EU exploded into hundreds of books.

The mechanics are simple: Roll the number of dice equal to your skill, and try to beat the difficulty. I’m not going to spend a lot more time dwelling on the mechanics.

The rules lend themselves to on-the-fly storytelling, as anything and everything can be easily created as needed. Run into a group of thugs? All their stats are 3, except for their Strength, which is a 4. Stumbled into a Rancor’s nest, but don’t have the Rancor’s stats in front of you? Feel the wrath of 6d6.

Did I mention it uses only d6′s? An elegant weapon for a more civilized age…

I’ve been aching to run a game of d6 Star Wars now. I’ve got a few people on tap for some online gaming of it. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Editor’s Note: I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. It’s Friday, and that means another installment of the actual play of our online Star Wars RPG, assembled and adapted by Kate. And, today is Kate’s birthday! Happy birthday, Kate!

Looking at HA-K7, Page spoke first. “We made a deal with a Hutt, to deliver you to him. Now, I am not so sure we can go through with this.” Alan took a brief pause. ”Actually there is no way in Kessel we can go through with this.“ Shifting his attention to the crew, he said firmly, ”We can’t let this information fall into the wrong hands, especially not a Hutt. I recommend we tell him the deal is off.”

Turning back to the droid, Page continued, “HA-K7 does the name Troba mean anything to you? And if it does, why would he want what your carrying, other than for its obvious monetary value?”

HA-K7 paused for a moment. ”Sir, I am not registering the name Troba anywhere within my databanks. If he is, as you say, a Hutt, he is probably interested in me only for the value of the information I carry.”

There was a brief silence. Then Kami’atra broke in. “Well, we must follow this course until the end… Should we not seek out the creator and requisitioner of such a devastating weapon?” He thought for a moment while deciding whether to expose his mentor, who knew a thing or two about militarized weapons – perhaps he would know what to do… No, my connections with Hoole shouldn’t be exposed without his expressed desire to do so, Kami’atra concluded silently to himself with a shake of his head.

Aloud, he said, “Perhaps we can uncover this information from Troba or the Hutt’s informants. As for now this is our only lead, unless one of you knows something I am unaware of…” Internally, he possessed great hope that there was another option, yet his heart told him that all of this would lead to the same place, no matter which path they chose.

“We really have two options here,” said Kibur, looking at the group. ”We can either turn this droid over to the Hutts, or, as Kam says, get information from them; or alternatively, we could turn the droid over to the Republic and suffer any hardships the Hutt Crime Syndicate decides to bring down on us.”

Kami’atra nodded. “I have no personal qualms with disgruntling the Hutts – there is no integrity in them, no honor… I haven’t any idea how we got ourselves entangled with them in the first place; but now that we find ourselves herein, I must say that I find no faith in the Hutt Syndicate, and only very little within the Republic itself. It seems to me that the lesser of two evils seems to be to surface this information to the Republic.”

Kami’atra thought to himself for a moment or two as he glanced around at the members of the crew. As his vision passed the Jedi among them, he voiced his opinion on the matter. ”If we are to take this droid to the Republic, might I suggest we approach the Jedi with this matter? If we were to choose the path leading to the Republic, and as we’d be headed to Coruscant, the Jedi Temple would be an obvious choice to one such as myself. What do the rest of you think?”

Unnoticeable to anyone but Kami’atra, Irulan’s posture changed very slightly at this last suggestion.

”One minute you’re scoffing at the Temple, and now you want to go to them for counsel?“ Her eyes narrowed mildly. ”I agree – we can’t take it to Troba. But we made a deal, which means he’ll be on our tail as soon as he finds out what we’ve done. That is, if he hasn’t already.”

”It’s the Senate that really needs to know about this, but there’s always the risk of informants within it. So I guess the Temple is our best option, though I don’t really know what we expect the Council to do. But I’d like to go back; I have some . . . matters to attend to.”
Lt. Page sighed, as if he were about to say something crazy. “I would agree, taking HA-K7 to the Jedi is the wisest choice. We need to find out why Troba wants this droid. As Kam stated, Troba is our best lead. Agreed, the droid needs to be safe, but I think a small group of us need to meet Troba, or at least make contact with him or his agents.” The Lt. laughed a little to himself with a smirk on his face. ”He’ll want us dead sooner or later, why not use this chance while we still can?

“An interesting thought, Lt.,” Kami’atra said. “The Hutts are always seeking power, whether that power is tangible or intangible in nature; they’re always dealing in information as well, though, in recent decades, even the Hutts are serving someone more sinister. I believe that I may speak for all of us when I say that we ought not to bring the droid to Troba now that we know what the droid is in possession of; and if we are to be hunted by Troba either way, why should we split ourselves to approach the devious Hutt?”

Feeling as if his point was entirely missed by his companion, the Lt. restated it while shifting his weight forward and leaning toward Kami’atra. ”Kam, this is our last chance to contact the Hutt before he knows we have double-crossed him. I recommend we take advantage of it and get as much information as we can.”

“I see your point, Lt., who do you suggest placate the Hutt while the rest sort out the decision of the droid?” Kami’atra certainly recognized that he’d stepped on some toes by dodging the idea of splitting the group to attempt an interrogation of a Hutt on its own field; he apologized to Page for doing so while, more subtly, standing the ground of his own decision. “I will most certainly perform my utmost for the decision that the crew arrives at, to whatever end… as would we all, I’m sure.”

“Oh boys – don’t bicker,” Irulan said, watching the tensing of the two men in front of her. ”We won’t split up the valuable members of the party. I’ll go,“ she smiled lightly. ”You all take the droid to the Council. Kibur can drop me off in Hutt Space, and I’ll find a way to convince Troba that we never found K7 at all. I can be very persuasive.” She looked to her friends, her chin tilted in quiet determination.

Shocked at her desire to volunteer, Page realized he should have expected her to come between him and an argument, as she had often done in missions past. He decided that he needed to put the breaks on this fast. ”Irulan, before we decide who’s going, we need to decide if it is worth the risk.” He backpedalled further, attempting to keep the young Jedi from getting too far ahead of herself, and also realizing that he had several steps already planned in his head on how to get to the rendezvous, letting the crew go on to the Temple and protect the droid.

With a long sigh the Lt. looked at each member of the crew and said, ”I have saved this crew many times over, but I have almost gotten us killed a fair number as well. If someone leaves knowing this could get them killed, then I’ll go.”

“That won’t be necessary, Alan,” Kibur said firmly. “We need you to protect the droid. He is, after all, what this mission is all about.”

Kibur turned back to Irulan. “You forget that Hutts are not so susceptible to Jedi mind tricks. Their minds are as slick as they are. If they catch you in the lie, you’ll be in grave danger.” He looked back at Page, Kam and Bax. ”Here’s the plan. We can stop at Concord Dawn and split from there. The three of you take the Iron Dawn to Coruscant; Irulan and I will find alternate means of transportation from there. Ill be with Irulan the whole time in case things get hairy.”

“I can take care of myself, thank you very much,” Irulan looked pointedly at Kibur, but his raised eyebrows were sufficient answer as to his opinion on the matter.

”Fine. It’s settled then. Let’s go.” Spinning on her heel, she marched out of the room towards her cabin to get her things together.

“So be it… The LORD bless you and keep you both. It will not be too soon when we see you two returned safely…” Kami’atra most definitely did not enjoy the idea of the group splitting up, especially with one group facing the deception of a Hutt known particularly for its personal ruthlessness, and the other facing a sense of uncertain darkness at their destination of Coruscant. But the group had decided, and he would serve that decision to the best of his ability.

Kami’atra turned to Page and gave him an encouraged nod that carried with it a feeling of utter preparedness, and a desire for them to help get Irulan and Kibur ready and to re-plot a course to the crew’s port of separation, Concord Dawn.

Glad to have swayed the Jedi’s mind, Kibur left the workshop, and headed for the bridge to recalculate the coordinates. “Dawn,” he said, looking up. ”Change of plans.”

”Oh?“ the Iron Dawn said.

”We’re splitting up. You’ll be dropping Irulan and me off at Concord Dawn and then continuing on with Kami’atra, Alan and Bax to Coruscant.”

”You’re breaking up with me?“ the ship asked in a mocking manner.

”It’s not you, babe. It’s me.”

He arrived on the bridge and dropped the ship out of hyperspace to recalculate the route. All around them was silent darkness. The stars continued in their stately dance through the heavens. There were no nearby stars or planets, just dark matter and pinpricks of light.

Back in the workshop, the Lt. leaned with his arms against the wall and his fists clenched, letting out a sigh of disappointment at Kibur’s decision. A moment passed, then Alan walked past the others hastily. ”Give me a minute,” he stated as he headed toward the bridge after Kibur.

Once inside the bridge, he turned around to close the door behind him. “Kibur, fine – you want to pursue this lead without me, that’s your prerogative. You and I have faced the Hutts before; she hasn’t. Kibur, although Irulan is a Jedi, she can be brash and quick-tempered…” he paused, remembering that was something he always liked about her. ”I’m asking you to reconsider your decision and take either Kam or me; if something happened to her or you, I’d never forgive myself.” He looks at his companion piercingly, hoping to remind him of the years of history they’d had on this ship, fighting and working together for the good of the galaxy.

Kibur turned in his chair to the Lt. “Page,” he said, then paused a moment. ”Alan…” He indicated a seat for Lt. Page to sit in, and sighed. “I can see this isn’t going to be resolved soon, so let’s talk.”

Alan took the offered seat and leaning toward Kibur with his hands on his knees. As Kibur spoke, he continued to punch in calculations. ”I understand your concerns. But the fewer we have going into the mouth of the Sarlaac, the better. If there are only two of us, we’ll get out easier in a bind.“ He finished his calculations. ”I know how you feel about her, but you can’t let that cloud your judgement.“ As he pulled the lever, the ship stretched into hyperspace. ”In the end, I can’t force you to leave us and go to Coruscant. But I can ask you.”

The Lt. paused, processing his friend’s bold statements about his feelings toward Irulan. ”Kibur, this is not about my feelings toward her…” He closed his eyes and leaned back in the chair before continuing, with an aggravating sigh of frustration at being caught actually showing his feelings for her. “What it is about, is that you may both be fully capable members of this team, but I am telling you this is probably not a good idea.”

“Come on, Alan,” said Kibur, standing up. ”You know me. My life is full of bad ideas. What’s one more?“ He smirked. ”Trust me.”

Frustrated, Alan stood up and pointed his finger at his seated friend ”Fine, Kibur – if you think you and Irulan can pull this off, than go. But if you guys get into trouble, I’m not coming after you.” Finishing his statement, the Lt. opened the door. As he stepped into the hall, he felt himself already calming down from his outburst. With a quick look back, he added sharply, “Take care of her!” He walked back down the hall to begin cleaning his Repeater.

Outside in the main hold, Irulan saw Kami’atra leaving the workshop, and walked swiftly to catch up with him. “Kam . . . wait,” she said, taking his arm. “I know what you’re thinking – that this is a bad idea. But Kibur knows what he’s doing; I’ll be safe enough with him. Please don’t worry about us.

”You and I share a ‘connection,’ after all. You’ll know what’s going on with me the whole time. And if we’re in trouble, you’ll know. Same goes for you. I know I’ll be able to sense how you’re doing, even from that far away. We’ll still be able to watch out for each other, as always.

”I have to go get my things ready. Do you think you could meet me in a few hours, in the port lounge? There are some things I feel I need to tell you, before you go to the Council. And I think . . . perhaps this arrangement is best, after all. I think it is best that you see them, and not me.”

Kami’atra told her warmly that he would meet her at the appointed time and that he knew that they would complete their task among the Hutts without fail – he knew that she would be alright and that they would keep in touch. He wished her well in preparing, both physically and mentally, and reminded her to pay close attention to her healing but currently bruised ribs as they might give her trouble during this mission.

As they parted, Kami’atra smiled to her and assured her that all would be well in the end – he thought eschatologically yet spoke temporally. He left her to her preparations and headed to his domicile within the medical bay to check on supplies and to put everything in order prior to his meditation.

Once everything was replaced within the room, Kami’atra reached for his satchel and drew from it the simple leathern tome within. Opening the codex to a very familiar and well-worn passage, he read the words silently yet with lips moving and with hand motions, as if he were the one speaking. As he finished, he placed the still-open tome upon the examination table, after opening it to a different passage corresponding to a very different period of time. He stood with his back to the door and stretched out his hands with palms upward; his mind’s eye closed to all sights and sounds that blurred and hummed about the cabins and corridors of the Iron Dawn, and he focused himself deeply within the blackness then found in the silence.

All time and space seemed to sift and shift away as he considered the paths before the crew, in particular the darkness that he’d foreseen for them at Coruscant. It was difficult to foresee this particular section of time for some reason, although prophecy had always been a common practice for him and his brethren at home as they maintained Oracle status for that region of space. Thankful for the gift of foresight, he prayed for the ability to uncover more about this dark presence that he felt and saw.

The room was utterly silent. Then, without warning, Kami’atra snapped out of his vision, his head thrown back. His knees buckled as he fell to the floor. A cold sweat enveloped him.

Irulan made her way to her chamber. Quietly closing the door behind her, she hung her long brown robe neatly over a chair, and then pulled out a book wrapped in scarlet cloth from under her bed. Opening its cover, she flipped midway through to a spot marked with a leather cord, and she began to write something in the top right-hand corner.

Hearing a slight tapping at the door, Irulan shut the book and hastily slid it under the bed, then stepped towards the door and listened.

“Mistress Jedi? Are you there?” a slightly electronic voice murmured.

At the sound of the droid’s voice, Irulan opened the door. “Come in, K7.” She motioned politely towards the seat at her desk, even though she knew droids didn’t really have to sit down. Seating herself on the edge of her bed, she looked at their new friend inquisitively. “How can I help you?”

“Please, Mistress Jedi, call me Hak,” the droid said, ”most do.“ He walked into the room, standing there, looking about. It seemed he didn’t notice Irulan’s gesture to the chair. She could almost see him inventorying things, as a machine with such brain power would. He finally stopped, and looked at Irulan. ”I wish to… thank you. For doing this. Who knows what the Hutts would do to my central processors in an effort to extract this information…”

He ran his hands across the carbon scoring of his chest, near the holoprojector unit.

“Hak, then,” she said. ”And you’re welcome. However – if you had simply showed the Hutts the information, as you did with us, then you wouldn’t have suffered any damage. Are you loyal to the Republic, then?

”There’s another thing I still want to know. What happened to you, before we got to you in that tower? How did you get there? And how did that monstrous . . . thing get there? You must know who put this information inside you in the first place.”

“Mistress Jedi,” Hak said, ”to be quite truthful… I don’t know. I remember nothing of my previous history, leaving me to assume my memory has recently been wiped. The only things I remember are the horrible tortures I received at the hands of the droids in that facility. Hours upon hours as the restraining bolt held me in place, they would take saws to me, arc wielders… trying to do what, I’ll never know. I don’t know if the information was in me in the first place, or whether they placed it there.“ He looked at her with his single eye. ”I do not know if I am loyal to the Republic. But you and your people have saved me. I am loyal to you.”

Just then, Kibur’s voice came in over the intercom. ”Attention, passengers: we will be dropping out of hyperspace momentarily. Stand by.” The sounds of the sublight engines kicking in and the hyperspace engines dropping out echoed through the ship.

They had arrived at Concord Dawn.
