A Gaming Dry Spell

Where have I been?  Lost in a gaming void, and by that I mean living in a world without gaming :( Yup, sad face.  I don’t even think I’ve written a post for the blog since GenCon in August.  That’s really just pathetic on my part.

On the other hand I’ve found that it’s about impossible to write a post for a gaming blog when you haven’t been doing anything even slightly related to gaming in months!

With our recent move, a looooong trip out of town and not having a regular gaming group, or a gaming group at all for that matter, there’s not a lot of inspiration.

Lately it’s gotten the better of me and I’ve been desperate to game.  Luckily my brother-in-law was in town a couple weeks ago and put our son to bed so that I was able to go to the FLGS with my husband where he’s been running the D&D Encounters.  I hear about it every week and must admit that I’m a bit jealous that he gets to go play every Wednesday.  Therefore, it was great to go play!

What I wasn’t expecting from the evening was a gaming table that had 10 players… half of them being 5th graders.  I even offered to not play several times and just observe so that the group was smaller but was talked into it by everyone else.  I just couldn’t see how it was going to work with so many people.

I must say I was pleasantly surprised.  The kids were really on task and pretty game focused.  They were constantly chattering but if you listened for a moment you realized it was entirely game related.  Kuddos to them for their interest.  The game actually ran very smooth and was a lot of fun.  I got to take on a pre-made Rogue character.  Stealthy and sneaky… my kind of character.  It was such a blast participating in a game again… even if only for a session.

This definitely put my wanting to play back into full gear!  I’ve been trying my best to fulfill my gaming desire with things like Munchkin and City of Thieves made by Fantasy Flight Games.  What an awesome game by the way.  It really has all the elements of a role playing game but in a board game.  Plus it was nice to see just how much flexibility could actually be found in the game.  You can make your own thieves guild and there are a handful of scenarios you can follow in the game.  I highly recommend this if you’ve only got an hour and need a gaming fix.

Now, Thanksgiving is coming and I’m looking forward to having my sister and brother-in-law for a visit… why?  Is it for the company?  Is it for the shared turkey and goodies…No…ok, well yes but NO!  It’s for the gaming possibilities.  You see we’ve recently gotten the two of them exposed to D&D and I’m pretty sure I could talk them into playing an encounter or two ;)

What about you?  What have you done to get yourself through a gaming dry spell?
