Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Session 1: Escape from Mos Shuuta

Beyond-the-Rim-Rival-Explorer-Star-Wars-245x300Last week, we played through the Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Beginner Box adventure, Escape from Mos Shuuta. Gabe arrived, ready to run his Wookiee pacifist doctor, Andrew played as his Herglic pilot, and Chuck hadn’t made a character yet, so he used the pregenerated human scoundrel from the Beginner Box.

The adventure is pretty straightforward: the heroes have pissed off a Hutt, and now need to get out of Mos Shutta, a backwater town on the backwater world of Tatooine. The only way off the planet is via a bounty hunter’s transport, the Krayt Fang. The players, having never played Edge of the Empire before, were able to quickly fall into character, and before too long, understood exactly how the dice worked and their overall odds of accomplishing a particular task based on which dice they were rolling. By the end of the session, the players had managed to get thrown out of the cantina, buy an old, busted blaster rifle, steal a ship’s spark-plug, run away from Imperial Stormtroopers, knock over the town’s water tower, cause a dewback stampede, and steal the ship! All in the course of only a couple of hours.

I really love how fast-paced the game is, and how every roll is far more interesting than simply: *roll* “You missed.” Each die roll tells a story. Why did you miss? The dice give you all of the reasons. It’s really brilliant. Once in space, the heroes were run down by Imperial TIE Fighters. After blasting them away, they jumped into hyperspace, only to realize the owner of the ship, a Trandoshan named Trex, was still onboard.

A quick fight ensued, and the Wookiee managed to get the Trandoshan subdued and stowed away, tied up, in a cargo hold. Now the players are on their way to Ryloth, where the Herglic knows a guy who can help them out of the bind they’ve now found themselves in, on the bad side of both a Hutt as well as the Imperials.

Next session is this Friday. After the game, Chuck made a character using the Age of Rebellion Beta book. He split his duty in half between Duty and Obligation, so he’s an alcoholic Chiss rebel agent, who’s a slicer and has the Rebellion duty to sabotage any Imperial property he can. One of our other players, Eli, will be joining us as well, and he’s planning on a human Bounty Hunter. These two heroes will join the party at Ryloth. I’m really excited to see where the game is headed! I’ll keep you updated.
