Board Game Review: Heroica

I received three different Heroica sets for my birthday back in March, and though I’ve put them together, I hadn’t gotten around to actually playing. This weekend seemed like the perfect opportunity, so I sat down with my four-year-old, and gave it a try. He did well with Dungeon!, so why not this?

I sat down and assembled the board. Gabe fiddled with the pieces, and in the end, decided he wanted to be the Knight, and wanted me to be the Wizard. This is the exact same setup he chose for when we played Dungeon! I played the wizard, he played the fighter.

So, we were playing Fortaan, the largest set, had to fight goblins inside a large and extensive castle, defeating the goblin king at the end.

Gabe quickly caught on to the rolling mechanics, and how to move his figure across multiple spaces. It only took a little coaxing to show him how to lose to a goblin graciously.

We played for about a half hour, and had a great time. I think we like it better than Dungeon! for two reasons: One, it’s Lego, and two (for me at least), it’s got a bit more depth to it.

We had a blast, and I hope to pull out the other sets and combine them with this in the future.

As a gamer dad I really appreciate your reviews of kid friendly, yet more interesting than Candyland games. Granted my daughter is only 2 and Legos are still a challenge to be mastered, but it never hurts to plan the tempting of a young impressionable person to the dark side.
