My GenConless RPG Purchases
I’ve got some RPG purchases I’ve made in the last few days, ones I’d be most likely making at GenCon, were I going. On Friday, we’ll be once again exploring the disappearance of the Godfell Stone, and I need to be prepped! The catacombs beneath Skytop Monastery are dangerous.
So here’s what I’ve got purchased.
Monster Vault: Threats of the Nentir Vale
Initially, my thought was, “What’s the point? I can just get the monster stats off DDI.” But I’ve heard that there’s a massive ton of information on the Nentir Vale, from the factions, to the individual players in the underschemings. They say that this is basically a campaign setting for the Nentir Vale. SOLD! I’m reading over it now, as it just came in the mail.
Plus, Matt James, the designer, is a pretty awesome guy.
Dungeon Tiles: Witchlight Fens
Sunday morning, the baby started crying early. Bridget, sleepily, told me she’d buy me a Dungeon Tiles set if I got up with the baby. I leapt from bed, and, that afternoon, went to the game store to get the Witchlight Fens. The players are nowhere near the fens, but I figured I’d better pick them up, for when they do find themselves in the swampland.
The set has some pretty nice river terrain, including bridges, boats, houses built into the swamp with docks, and more. I like the set, and look forward to implementing it.
Litko Bloodied Tokens
The game shop, Unique Gifts and Games, has a system where they give you a star on your membership card for every $20 you spend. It turns out, I finally had enough points, and I got $10 buying that Dungeon Tile set. So, rather than spend $2, I picked up these beauties. There’s 10 of them, and they will work great for marking bloodied monsters and, hopefully, players. Made out of transparent red plastic, they look like great blood-spatters.
Litko Torch-Bearer Markers
This is what I had hoped the game store had, when I settled on the bloodied markers. As such, I used some money I got from doing graphic design to pick up a couple of things at the Litko website. I’m really hoping they show up by Friday. The first is three Torch-Bearer markers. They butt right up next to the miniature stand, and show who is and isn’t carrying a torch. Perfect for the players as they begin to explore the catacombs deep beneath the Dawnforge Mountains.
I’ve seen these in action at GenCon, and they’re pretty cool. It makes a great, simple representation to see who’s got the light (and which tasty heroes are drawing the ire of the monsters in the darkness.
Litko Flying Stands
I remember at the bar of the GenCon Media Meet-and-Greet, Quinn pulled these out and showed Bridget and I. They’re pretty cool. These flying stands are able to hold up one model, while allowing another model to stand below. Definitely useful for giant bat attacks, savage Stirge infestations, or even one of the players finding a pair of rocket boots! (Note that there are no rocket boots in my campaign, so don’t even think about it, players!)
Overall, I think it’s a good little collection of things. The next session promises to up the ante for the players, and begins to leave clues as to who’s doing what in the campaign world.

I’m also going to be picking up the Threats to the Nentir Vale book. It is made of delicious.
