What the JLA Reboot Means For RPGs

And I’m back!
There’s been a lot of complaining on the interwebs about DC rebooting their entire universe. Basically, after the big summer comic event at DC, they’ll be renumbering all of the comics and restarting the universe. Rumor has it, Superman and Wonder Woman will be dating, lots of characters are getting costume makeovers, and lots of other big changes are in the works.
Now, I’m an absolute Marvel fan, never having had much interest in DC, but this actually interests me. I might actually read DC, if I don’t have to deal with their over-involved constant continuity resets. Ugh.
Green Ronin has the DC Adventures RPG, which, by all accounts, is pretty cool. Whereas, I would usually suggest playing heroes you make up yourself, this is the perfect opportunity to play the actual DC heroes themselves. The reboot is the perfect opportunity.
I’ve never liked the idea of playing established characters (see Serenity, the Star Wars RPG, et al), but if you were to play in a rebooted universe, anything is possible! Your adventures would be brand new, your characters could be different than the ones seen in the comics, and could actually be really, really interesting.
It’s your world now. You can leave out anything from DC you don’t like, you can add in things you do.
Best of all, you can find super cheap versions of all the heroes for Heroclix, and they’ll be perfect representations!
What do you all think? Would you give it a try, if the opportunity presented itself?
Perhaps, as a die-hard Marvel fan, I could do the same in the Marvel universe…

I’ve been thinking a lot about this. I think there’s a lot of interesting things coming out it. I have DC Adventures and I’m waiting for the new supplement. It really depends on your player’ familiarity with it.

*cough* X-Men Continuity *cough*
That’s why I’ve given up on the X-Men…
I’ve never been a big fan of DC myself, but I’m thinking I might start picking up the reboot stuff in trade paperback once those start coming out.

And Flashpoint Project Superman. You should pick that up.
Just saying.
There are some interesting things coming out of the Relaunch- and for me the more interesting things are those off the beaten path.
My own first thought was “I bet Steve Kenson is really pissed at DC right now”. After all, they have effectively invalidated the books right at the moment they come out. Way to go, DC.
Kudos to you for turning this on it’s head. This isn’t a cock-up, but an opportunity. A chance to reboot DC into your own world through the lens of Flashpoint. Why didn’t I think of that? And I should have – it’s exactly what I did way back when Secret Wars was running in Marvel and I used that to kick-start our old Marvel Superheroes campaign. The old heroes left, and they never came back. It’s the campaign we’re still running, many sessions (and changes in rules systems) later.
I’m tempted to run a game set in the world of DC, and you’re right. This is the perfect opportunity to do it. Hmmmmm.

I’ve always been a DC fan and I’m an on-again-off-again Marvel fan. I really don’t like Bendis and Quesada and their big events always seem to end in an anti-climatic way, but that’s neither here nor there (just my opinion).
You make a great point. I’m with you about the idea of not liking players playing established characters. However, Flashpoint and the reboot both provide great oppurtunities to take an established character and making them your own.
