This is the list I provided my new players on what they could play, as far as races and classes go. As far as any of them know, that’s all there is. I did it so as to give them enough variety that they’d be able to find something they liked, but not so many that they’d become confused. Also, in talking about the races, I didn’t mention classes to be paired with them from someone who is trying to optimize a character, but rather what I think sound cool, and what I’ve seen good examples of in the past.

Enjoy.

Classes

Fighter: The fighter is the typical warrior of the game. Their job is to charge in, sword swinging, and take down their enemies with might blows.

Warlord: Where the fighter’s job is to charge in head first, the Warlord keeps his head on his shoulders. While he also makes a good combatant, his primary strength is inspiring his allies to fight better.

Ranger: A ranger is a creature of the forest. Armed with bow and blade, the ranger is efficient at taking down single big foes rather than multiple smaller enemies.

Rogue: The rogue is the thief of the group. Good at backstabbing, finding traps and generally being sneaky, this class is good for lots of purposes.

Barbarian: Channeling the primal spirits of the wild, the barbarian taps into the fury of nature with broad swings of his great-sword or axe.

Bard: Jack of all trades, master of none, the bard is a wandering entertainer, whether it be lute or guitar player, singer, or other diversion, they inspire their allies and weaken their enemies.

Paladin: The paladin is the holy warrior of the group. Dedicating their life to a certain god and their ideals, they bring justice upon the enemies of their god. They are often seen in full plate-mail.

Cleric: The cleric is similar to a paladin, a holy warrior, but they choose to focus more on healing their allies, and protecting them from harm.

Avenger: Where a paladin or a cleric is a very public figure for their god, avengers represent their god’s wrath. Considered assassins by some, the avenger relentlessly tracks their foes across any distance to bring down the enemies of their god.

Wizard: The wizard is the primary spellcaster of the game. They create fireballs, bind their enemies in ice, and summon creatures from other worlds to do their bidding. Many of their attacks are able to deal damage to multiple enemies at the same time.

Warlock: Where a wizard dedicates their lives to intense studying, a warlock instead gains their powers through making a pact with some other entity. Some gain their power from the fey spirits, fairies and pixies, while others make infernal pacts with demons and devils. Still others often become astrologers, predicting their enemy’s death by the signs in the stars, and others make pacts with ancient gods long forgotten.

Races

Human: Humans are the prototypical race of the world. They are adaptable, dependable and come in many different appearances. They are some of the most versatile of people. They can easily be any class.

Elf: Elves are creatures of the forest. They are long-lived, quick and nimble. Elves are known particularly for their rangers.

Eladrin: The eladrin are the progenitors of the elves. While the elves are from the mortal world, eladrin hail from a world outside this one: the Feywild, a world filled with untouched wilderness. Eladrin are natural wizards and avengers.

Dwarf: Stout and bearded, dwarves are known for their strong constitutions and strength. They are often gruff and serious. Dwarves make good fighters and paladins.

Half-Elf: Half elves are born of the union of a human and elf. As such, they gain the best features of both races. They are one of the most versatile of races, able to adapt to any situation. Half-elves work well for any class.

Halfling: Halflings are a humanoid race half the size of most others. They can be quite mischievous, and are often rogues or bards.

Dragonborn: Dragonborn are human-sized, bipedal dragons, who are very strong and noble. They dedicate their lives to warfare and other similar pursuits. They make excellent warlords, paladins and barbarians.

Tiefling: Tieflings were created by an ancient civilization where humans and demons interbred. The result was the tiefling race. They can be conniving and sinister, though others can be quite friendly, eager to cast off the prejudices against their race. Tieflings are excellent wizards and warlocks.

Deva: The deva are a race of immortal beings who fought alongside the gods at the beginning of the world. The deva reincarnate. Each time they are killed, they reawaken in the middle of nowhere, full grown, but remembering nothing of their old lives. Deva make good wizards or clerics.

What about the Essentials classes?

That’s a whole other can of worms…

Short answer: None of the players have ever seen a D&D book, and so none of them have seen Essentials. I don’t own any of the Essential books but the Rules Compendium, so it’s not even an option.

If I had the books, I might allow one or two of them.
