Roll a d6
In case you haven’t seen it yet, this video has been making the rounds:
I haven’t seen it mentioned on too many blogs, but I want to talk about it here. What’s good, what’s bad, etc.
First of all, from the perspective of someone who’s not a gamer, I think this hits all the right notes. It makes roleplaying games look like a great time, not played by a bunch of social rejects who no one wants to be friends with, as is the stereotype. These gamers are just like you and me: normal people who are also roleplayers.
Also, they’re college students (or appear to be about that age). They aren’t a bunch of adolescent boys in their mom’s basement.
And girls! There are two girls in that group! Girls don’t game! The group has about the same make-up as the group I had back in Virginia: Three guys, two girls. And the girls look like normal people too!
The whole flavor of the thing really evokes a fantastic time spent playing D&D with friends.
On that note…
As a gamer, I saw a ton of glaring inconsistencies. Most obvious, to me? The DM has Thunderspire Labyrinth as module he has in front of him, but he’s using a map from Keep on the Shadowfell. The characters face a dragon, which isn’t in either of those modules! Sacrilege!
And is the DM really trying to pull a save-or-die with a d6? Is this Shadowrun?
However, as someone on the Giant in the Playground forums said: “If the GM tells you to roll a d6, you roll a damn d6.”
And since when are there save-or-die rolls in 4e?! (INSERT GROGNARDIAN STATEMENT HERE)

Anyway, I really enjoyed the video, and even went and downloaded it from iTunes. You should do the same.

Frankly, I thought the song was terrible, awful lyrics. The girl is good looking and that seems to be the draw. I think Chase Dat Gold was way better and more honest in its presentation of roleplayers.

Well, at least they weren’t playing Essentials. THAT would reek of conspiracies. Sure, maybe it wasn’t the greatest, but not every parody video is backed by the monies of Seth Green and Team Unicorn.
Lol, true. And in the end, to critique a fan-video I think is much like over-analyzing a doodle, probably not appropriate
