The Background Fluff for my Imperial Guard 40k Army: Jericho’s Favored

For a lot of players of Warhammer 40,000, all that matters is the battle. They show up, fight, and that’s it, no care for why it is they’re fighting. But 40k states: “In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war”. It doesn’t finish that sentence with “just… you know… because.”

The history of Warhammer 40,000 is a complex and deep one, with warring factions battling across the millions of worlds in the Imperium and beyond. And as a roleplayer, I can’t begin collecting my Imperial Guard army is without knowing who exactly it is I’m sending to their deaths by the will of the Emperor.

As such, I give you the background I’ve cooked up about my Imperial Guard. I also have some pictures included that I found online which give examples of what I’ll be doing with the troops.

Jericho III – Planetary Survey
Segmentum: Tempestus
Sector: Spartus
Sub-sector: Jericho
System: Jericho; 7 planets (I through VII)
Surveyed: Unknown; the system was brought into compliance near the end of the Great Crusade, circa M31.
Jericho III
Summary: A Mining and industrial world, home to the Celestial Lion Space Marine Chapter, it is known for its orbiting space stations and massive hive cities.
Population: 7.2 billion (human)
Mean Surface Temperature: 20 degrees Celsius
Seas: 51% of the surface is covered by shallow seas and oceans.
Principle Exports: Ore mined from the planet and neighboring moons.
Principle Imports: Foodstuffs, Munitions; Arms and weapons.
Food Supply: Food is grown off-world on Jericho II.
Urbanisation: Much of the planet is occupied, its barren landscape filled with small mining towns and villages. There are are twelve hives scattered across the globe, while the high mountains are left well enough alone as a home for the Celestial Lions chapter.
Notable Features: Most of the world is covered in black earth, barren of almost all plant-life, due to the filthy atmosphere and the constant mining. Great Mountains rise high into the sky, above the grey clouds, and are covered in white snow. Recently, large collections of strange green crystals have been found around the planet, some the size of skyscrapers.

Military Presence: Jericho III serves as the home world of a portion of the Celestial Lions Space Marine Chapter. During the Third War for Armageddon, the Celestial Lions were almost entirely wiped out, and occupied the planet for a time. While some of the brotherhood left to seek out some of their missing comrades, others in the chapter remained behind, setting up a permanent base here. Constantly looking over their shoulder for the Inquisition, the Celestial Lions continue to train and seek a way to continue on their line. Employing the Apothecaries from other chapters, they have begun extracting geneseed from their ranks, and have started recruiting novitiates from the system’s populace during ceremonial events.
Those who do not quite make the cut for the Space Marines are recruited into the renown storm trooper battalions of the Jericho Special Forces.
The Imperial Guard Regiment is stationed on Jericho III, and is drawn upon to serve in nearby conflicts. The Guard from the planet are known as Jericho’s Favored.
The Commissar presence is strong among the Imperial Guard here, as a Commissarial training school exists within the Hive City of Canaan.
Military Uniform: The uniforms of Jericho’s Favored are grey uniforms with gloss black leather boots and black body armor. Officers have blue piping on their wrists, and each unit is identified by regimental number.
The people of Jericho III have a particular dislike of the Eldar, as in 694.M39, Dark Eldar pirates attacked the world, destroying its capital city and killing 3,200 Planetary Defense Force (PDF) personnel, another 1,400 civilians, capturing 1,500 PDF personnel, and 16,800 civilians to use as slaves. This egregious atrocity has been remembered for over three thousand years, and Jericho’s Favored will not pass up any opportunity to strike down Eldar forces.

And that’s it! Hope you enjoyed seeing what I’ve got going on for my faction! Now to pick up some minis…
