Halloween Treat: Jack the Pumpkin Golem

Now, I haven’t had a DDI subscription for a few months, so the layout is still old-school, and the math is original math for the stats, but I hope you enjoy!

Rotpatch, the Reaper Mini who inspired the creation of this monster.

Happy Halloween! I’ve got a monster for you so terrifying, you may never wander into a pumpkin patch ever again.

The village of Shallowwood has been terrorized for years by the Lantern Cult. Each year, on the evening of the harvest, a malevolent spirit known as Jack arises from the pumpkin patch and, finding a scythe, terrorizes the village. However, when the sun rises the following morning, he is banished for another year.

The Lantern Cult wants to change that.

They have cast a powerful ritual, bringing Jack’s power to the forefront, allowing him to live on. The heroes must take down Jack, banishing him to the world from whence he came once and for all.

I really like this monster, but let me know if there’s anything you think should be changed with him. I’m open for suggestions to make this the scariest monster it can be!

That’s an awesome mini and an awesome encounter! Is his regeneration dependant on being in a pumpkin patch?

Ouch. That’s a fearsome one! I was thinking of putting him in my upcoming Oct 30th game (we will be costumed) for some Halloween flavor. But i think my 5th level 4 PC team might be TPK’ed from this monstrosity.

I like the concept, and especially the feeling of fighting the whole pumpkin patch rather than just a single creature. One thing that newer solos tend to have is a trait to deal with daze, stun, and dominate and/or an ability to act on multiple initiative numbers. Also, most of Jack’s attacks are standard actions, so you could probably get more use out of some of them by weakening a bit and changing to minor actions. Vine Grasp in particular seems like a good candidate to be a minor action.

That is a BEAUTIFUL mini! Where on earth did you get it? I notice it isn’t painted yet…

This stat block is great. Thanks for doing this work! My girls won’t be meeting Hallowe’en weekend, but I don’t need a Hallowe’en game to throw a really awesome monster at my party. Thanks for sharing!

@Stuart: That’s a great idea! As soon as I get a new DDI subscription, I’ll definitely add that.
@Francois: It’s easy to bring this monster down a level or two. Just bring down his HP a few dozen points, bring down all his other stats by 2-3 points. Give it a try, and let me know how it goes!
@Glimm: I like the idea of weakening up some abilities into minor actions. That’s something else I’ll tweak.
@TheRPGrrl: It’s actually a mini made by Reaper at reapermini.com. Look up “Rotpatch” in the search, and you should find it. If not, look up golem. It’s nice figure. LEt me know if you use the monster! I’d love to see people’s reports!
