GenCon: My Mecca

Ever since I began playing RPGs at the age of 15 (10 years now… Has it really been a decade?) I’ve heard of GenCon. Spoken about as advertisements in the back of hardback Wizards of the Coast supplements, Star Wars Gamer, Dragon and Dungeon Magazines, GenCon was always the far off place where your dreams came true.

“The Best Four Days in Gaming,” I was promised.

No one I knew had ever attended, or was planning on attending. It was on the other side of the continent from the (relatively) small town of Spokane, WA. The gaming community was tight-nit, but untraveled. Some were willing to travel 6 hours to Seattle for a few Cons, but never to
Indianapolis. Hearing about GenCon was like hearing about New York City if you’ve never been to it: Big, loud, and fantastic.

As the years went on, GenCon fell off my radar. I would see it mentioned in magazines or by someone on a forum on the internet, and just ignore it. I would never go, so what was the point of knowing anything about it?

Then, one day, while working at Getaway Games, a guy came in to the store with a bunch of tiny, plastic ships, which I would later know as Pirates of the Spanish Main. At the time, they weren’t even out in stores, but he was diligently putting them together. I asked him what they were. He told me. I asked where he got them. Two sweet, sweet words emanated from his lips. “Gen. Con.”

I asked him all about it. He told me about the huge convention halls, the famous game designers, everything. It was fascinating.

Then it fell off my radar again. When you have no way of going, you don’t think about it much.

Then, almost two years ago, I began Dice Monkey and joined the RPG Bloggers Network. I attended my first Con with my buddy Dave, when the two of us went down to ConCarolinas, where we met Dave The Game and Geek’s Dream Girl. Even with the massive speeding ticket I got on the way down that promised to ruin my weekend, I had a fantastic time.

Soon after that, Jeff, Zach and I started RPG Circus, which, if the legends are true, is the “Greatest Show in Gaming.” They began talking about their GenCon plans. I wasn’t going last year, due to finding out about it too late, and not having the money to do so. I was bummed out, but I knew it just wasn’t in the cards. Bridget promised me, “next year, we’ll go to GenCon.”

And here I am: Only a few weeks away from finally going to my Mecca, the ”Best Four Days in Gaming.”

I hope it lives up to my expectation.

How about you? Are you attending? Have you attended in the past? Did it live up to your expectations?

As you surely know already I am extremely excited to attend Gen Con this year. I have to admit I am not really a Con goer, but Gen Con is different. The chance to meet with a lot of the nice people I know from the internet and the opportunity to chat with people from the industry is just too great to miss. I am very glad I decided to go to Gen Con and I think it will be a blast. Wow, it’s about three weeks when I take off from Frankfurt! Wheeeee! :)

I do not think you will be disappointed, overwhelmed maybe, but not disappointed. It is an amazing place and I have always enjoyed my time there, even when I am working in the Demo Mines (so, drop by the AEG booth in the exhibit hall and say hello. I will show you some of the fine AEG games we have this year).

I, too, had heard about GenCon all my gaming life (since 1982!), but figured there was no way a kid from South Alabama was ever going to get to Lake Geneva, then Milwaukee, then Indianapolis (as the years went by).

The only Con I really went to was DragonCon in Atlanta. I went back in 92 and 93, then Conned my brother-in-law into going with me back in 05, drug my wife into it in 06, and have been going every year since.

Three years ago (07), I decided that I needed to look into GenCon again. It always seemed so magical, so far off. Since it coincides roughly with my son’s birthday, I decided I would fly him home from California and we would drive to Indy and see what it was all about.

Holy crap.

I honestly had no idea. I had been previously impressed with the folks at DragonCon pulling together a couple thousand gamers of various sorts and tossing them into a bunch of rooms in the middle of nearly 28000 other, non-gaming Con-goers. I was used to seeing hordes of folks in costume, goth-kids, vampires, etc. wandering the halls of downtown Atlanta. This did not prepare me for GenCon.

My son and I were practically slack-jawed when we walked in and saw the dealer/exhibit hall. When I first walked into a room the size of a banquet hall that was JUST TRAIN GAMES, I nearly fell over. As I trod the halls of the Indianapolis convention center, it dawned on me that I was in the middle of some 25000 GAMERS. These people weren’t here to see movie or tv stars. They weren’t here for goth concerts. They were here to play.

We have been every year since, and I can’t think of any non-catastrophic event that will keep me from going every year hence.

Last year was my first year at GenCon. Not only was it fun to play games I haven’t played in a while. It was fun to meet up with people I only knew from Blogs and Podcasts. I didn’t find it overwhelming but I did wish that I had more time there (and I was there for all four days). There is just a lot of stuff to see and a lot of stuff to do. Did it live up to my expectations? Since, I’m going again this year, I think it did. I look forward to meeting you there. Hell, I’m looking forward to meeting as many people as I possibly can while I’m there. With 3 weeks left, I’m starting to count the days in major way.

It’s gonna rock your socks. Then take them off, laundry them, put them back on your feet and rock them off once more. Daily. Before noon. Repeat ad nauseum.

Yeah, it’s like that. Don’t expect to do everything, and repeat this mantra to yourself: I will return.

Drop by Rogue Games and say hi. I’ll be the red-bearded guy in the Irish hat or the kilt. Or both. ;-)

GenCon is an experience. Like you, GenCon just wasn’t on my radar. The difference is that I never had an excuse, I live in Indiana! But in ’07 I decided it was time to get my friends together and make the trip down to Indy. And then stuff came up. So in ’08 we planned in advance and made it down on Saturday. It blew our minds so much that last year we went down three days earlier and stayed for the whole con. 30,000 fellow gamers descending on 4-5 city blocks for the better part of a week. GenCon is an experience.
