Starlight… Starbright… Stargate?

I’ve always been fascinated by the stars.  I’ve dreamt of traveling them many times.  As many children do, I wished and wanted desperately to be an astronaut!  And as with most of us, except a very select few, that doesn’t quite happen.

But I figure I can’t be the only one who has these dreams because, if I were, I don’t think such a market would exist for things like Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate and so on.

This leads me to  my on-and-off-again desire to run a Stargate campaign.  A few years back Mark bought me the Stargate SG-1 RPG and I have greatly enjoyed rifling through it.  To be honest most of my playing has been in a 4th edition world so the rules are a bit foreign.  Though I may not use the RPG guide for all the rules I will definitely use it for all the fluff it provides.

The book has fantastic sections on primary worlds that already exist and even a section that allows you to create your own.  There are whole sections that give detailed descriptions on a handful of different species that would be commonly encountered through the Stargate not to mention the beginning of the book where it has a great history of the Stargate as well as an outline of the Stargate program itself.

Though I plan on using all of this in creating a great story I am planning on running more of a “Savage-Stargate”.  I’ll be using the Savage Worlds core rule book as well as some of their additional resources for character creation and abilities.

As Mark has been discussing we are looking at running some mini-campaigns that would run between 4-8 weeks each.  I am very excited about running one of these myself.

I am going to be using the time off from gaming, due to our relocation to Chicago, as a chance to really develop a great story arc.  The goal would be to create an 8 week campaign but that would involve seemingly stand alone ‘events’ that add to the story as a whole.  Just as I think would be done with almost any RPG.

It will be my first real step-out as a GM.  I have GM’ed for friends around here a game or 2 but, I myself, have never been in charge of directing a whole campaign.

I hope that we can find people who would be interested in this sort of thing.  I’ve not watched the new Stargate Universe show but one of the best few word descriptions I received was, “It’s like BSG meets Stargate SG-1″.  Ok, that sounds cool.  Therefore, I have even been considering something more along the lines of that combination.

I haven’t fully decided on campain ideas yet and I’m not afraid to admit that I think I might grab some ideas straight from the show itself.  You see, most of the people who have shown interest in joining for this sort of game like the idea in general but are not major ‘fans’ of the show… why re-invent the wheel if you don’t have to?  Right?  You know I’m right?  :)

So, to the stars we will go.  At least for a few hours, once a week, for a month or two…

I’ve read through the rules for the SG-1 RPG and would love to try it some time. The Stargate universe is very rich and well-developed while also having the ability for massive creativity on the player/GM side. Can’t find a world that fits your game? Make one up.

Savage Worlds is one of those games I keep seeing referenced places but have yet to really investigate. One of my big goals for a few years now was to work up an SG-1 game using the WEG D6 rules for Star Wars. Life happened and I never quite got around to doing it…

Best of luck with your campaign! I love the idea of a campaign with a set story ending.
