I forgot the dragons…

In all my years of playing DnD, I’ve only ever had the players face one dragon. One. As a player, I myself have only faced one. One.

They’ve fought through plenty of dungeons. Plenty. But a young white dragon taken down by my players, and the ancient black dragon my 7th-level halfling bard hid from (ask me to tell you that gem of a story sometime) don’t seem like a large enough number of dragons I should have seen in a game like D&D.

Now, do I intend to change that? Yeah. If you’re one of my players, don’t read this… Oh, wait, they don’t...

In an upcoming game, dragons take full front stage as the Lords of Dust in Eberron plot to unchain Tiamat and rain down fire upon the Khorvaire as all the dragons of the world go mad. Sounds like a plan, huh? I hope to feature a lot more dragons.

How about all of you? Are dragons a common staple of your Dungeons & Dragons games? Or are they forgotten?

This is actually why they made the Dragonlance setting: Lots of Dungeons & no Dragons.

My campaign world is ruled by dragons. But because of that, the dragons are rarely fought, more sort of a big background threat/element. But characters could fight dragons if they wanted to, it is just that no one has decided it was worth it yet.

My party, despite nearly getting TPKed by rats and spiders, always demolishes any dragons they go up against. So I just don’t try any more.

I always thought the problem with dragons is that people expect them. So when it comes time to actually fight them, it’s usually just a huge letdown. But maybe that’s just a combination of having played with people who specifically prepare themselves to lay the smack down on one enemy, and myself being far too lazy to use the dragon with all the proper rules.

I was in the exact same situation as you a year ago. Since we decided to start 4E, and thus a whole new campaign, I decided “Oh what the hell…let’s make a Dragon-centric campaign!” Of course, starting out the Dragons were only existing in the lore and myths of the world. An Empire founded by Bahamut, protected by Dragonborn elite, and paranoia of the cults of the “Betrayer” Tiamat. But as they approached Paragon Tier, and let the chaos loose in the world. And now, they’re about to have to freaking take down the daughter of the goddess herself! If this ends up the only dragon-centric campaign I ever run, I’ll be okay with it. Normally I avoid it just to avoid fantasy cliche….but there has been some wicked fun just embracing all the tropes of it and running mad!
