Invasion

In a recent post on dungeonmastering.com, Yax talks about the idea of using aliens in your campaign. Instead of using aliens from outer space, however, you can use an altogether different, though still familiar form of alien: planar creatures.

A Githyanki invader
I absolutely love this idea. He mentions Githyanki arriving in airships, wholly alien to the creatures of the material world. I’ve always liked the Githyanki, but never have used them in any of my games. Perhaps now would be a good time to start.
What if the world your characters lived in was much like our own, unaware of any life outside of our own. The governments of the world have suppressed the knowledge of the planes, known only to the governments, high wizard councils and the higher echelons of the cleric assemblies. The common belief among these clandestine groups is that if people knew what was waiting for them on the other side of the vale, it could cause chaos in the streets.
Even the Eladrin, those who live in the material plane, view the Feywild as an ancient myth of their people, not knowing that they have a whole other civilization just on the other side of the rainbow.
But through some occurrence, the wall separating the material plane from the others has begun to weaken. Eladrin cities begin to appear. Foul elementals have begun attacking outlying cities. No one knows where these monsters are coming from. Suddenly, a fleet of Githyanki ships appear in the sky above the largest of the cities in the material plane. It appears to be an invading force.
But are they there to conquer, or have their seers predicted an influx from the Far Realms, a far worse threat than the mortal world could ever imagine?
You decide.

I’ll choose the later of the two.
One: I love the Githyanki as well.
Two: I also love psions and a threat from the Far Realm is right up my ally.
I really like this idea of “Aliens Among Us”, whether they are here to conquer, explore, study or whatever. Not only is this a great idea if your players are not that familiar with planar monsters, but the movie plots alone that you can mine ideas from is staggering.
