Aldan Vane, a 1st Level Swordmage, full of vigor and hope.

Aldan Vane, a 1st level Swordmage, full of fury and hope.

In our current 4e game, we’ve been playing in the world of Eberron, battling the rising power of the Lords of Dust. The last session ended with the characters fighting inside a corrupted Creation Forge against a Drow sorcerer and the “Hellforged”, a group of Warforged created by the corrupted Creation Forge. Amongst  the turning gears, they discovered a Khyber dragonshard was powering the corrupted machine, and attempted to destroy it. The crushing of the crystal brought the forge apart around them, giving them barely any time to escape. During the course of moving through the Forge, one Hellforged they fought was disabled, and Tana, the Windsoul Genasi Sorceress shoved it into a Bag of Holding in an attempt to later determine how to break the sorceries entangling the creature’s soul.

We determined that this would be the last game of the year, due to the holidays. The next time we got together we would advance the storyline ahead 1 year, as well as the characters from 9th to 11th level, to represent the time difference.

Bridget, Tana’s player, decided that she was getting bored of Tana, and now would be the perfect time for her to switch up characters. She’ll be playing the Hellforged the group captured, who has been exorcised and is now a Warforged Avenger, devout in the belief of the Silver Flame.

Aldan Vane, an 11th level Swordmage, changed by the Shadowfell

Aldan Vane, an 11th level Swordmage, broken and changed by the Shadowfell.

My character, Aldan Vane, an Eladrin Swordmage, will have went into Dolurrh (the Shadowfell), to seek out his fallen brethren who were killed in the Mourning, where he was captured by a clan of Shadar-Kai before becoming the leader of the clan through the slaying of their leader. As time works differently in the Shadowfell than the Material Plane (in our campaign), what felt like 10 years for him was only a year in Eberron. He has come back changed by the Shadowfell. His paragon path will be the Ghost Blade, allowing him to turn insubstantial and phase.
We’re all really looking forward to moving into the next phase of the game. None of us have tried Paragon Tier yet,  but I think we can handle it.
I for one, know that my DMing hasn’t been great. It’s mostly been one long dungeon crawl. But I expect that all to change in the upcoming sessions, as I have a lot planned for my heroes and for Aldan as well.

Sounds interesting, but I must confess it’s Greek to me, I haven’t played in Eberron at all.
So am I to understand that you DM and play Aldan? How’s that working out for you? I’ve thought about trying that myself.

I’ve found it works pretty well. I’m not a dick DM who is going to hog the spotlight, and since we have a couple other DMs in the group, they can step in at any time and I’ll have a character there and ready to go.
I’ve really always played a DMPC. I haven’t known any difference.
I definitely think you should give it a try, if you can handle it.

Mark, I know this is a necro post, but I absolutely love the photo you used of Paragon Tier Aldan, I don’t suppose you happen to recall the source?

He’s actually a character from Magic: The Gathering. I was even able to get some M:tG card sleeves that had him on them, which I used for the power cards. I don’t recall his name, though. You can look on WotC’s M:tG site, though. He was on the very front page for a while.

Thanks for the question!

You sir, are amazing, thank you so much for the prompt reply. I am looking for it as we speak. And, while I’ll admit I just came here for the picture, I’ve really enjoyed your blog posts, I’ll be sticking around to see what else you have to say. Thanks for the great stuff!

Here you are, sir: http://casualmagic.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/zendikar-art-spoiler.jpg

The character’s name is Sorin Markov: http://community.wizards.com/twincitiesmagicplaygroup/blog/2009/08/28/zendikar_spoiler_sorin_markov

You can see another image of him at the top of that screen as well, next to the elf woman.

Yep, just found him, thank you so much! My Revenant Avenger of the Raven Queen just became all the more real to me.

I’ll fire up a 4th Ed game online and you can play him to your heart’s content.

I need to renew my WotC subscription first…

I’ve got your email, now. I’ll write you sometime once I’ve got an account again. :D
