Gaming with a Significant Other: Part 2

A few days ago we put up a post where my husband discussed gaming that involved significant others, including wives and girlfriends.  We had many terrific comments on the post of people sharing their collective experiences and we got a great link from Chatty DM (Thanks!).

Now, I’d like to share gaming with the S.O. from another perspective, mine, and that of the gamer, not the DM.  To be honest I was very wary of being in a game that my husband was running.  Even though I knew he wouldn’t show me favoritism I was still afraid that if something really cool did come my way or work in my favor that the other players would think that was what happened.

I didn’t and still don’t want any preferential treatment when we are playing.  I like to sit down with the other players and be just as surprised by an ambush or just as confused by a tricky riddle.  I try to make sure I interrupt him no more than anyone else and do my best to balance all of my table talk with actual playing.  I don’t ask for special treatment, though sometimes I do pretend to peak over his GM screen.  The good part is that the other players are our friends and they KNOW I am only kidding around.

Trust me, it’s obvious that I’m not being treated special when a Hobgoblin knocks me across the room and destroys half my hit points.  (Editor’s Note: This actually happened. Bwahaha!) And you know what, I’m glad it’s that way.

I have a story from the other side, too. About 7 years ago, I started dating the Guild Master of my EverQuest guild. Very few people in the guild knew, and actually once they DID know (it leaked out), he made it a point to ONLY award me loot at raids if NOBODY ELSE needed it. I was always last in line just so he could prove he wasn’t favoring me. It sucked.

(Fast-forward: I dumped his sorry arse. But it was about other stuff, long after our EQ days were over.)
